CSS Showcase
The Zen Garden. Since there is clearly a need for CSS to be taken seriously by graphic artists, the Zen Garden aims to excite, inspire, and encourage participation. To begin, view some of the existing designs in the list. Clicking on any one will load the style sheet into this very page. The code remains the same, the only thing that has changed is the external .css file. CSS allows complete and total control over the style of a hypertext document. The only way this can be illustrated in a way that gets people excited is by demonstrating what it can truly be, once the reins are placed in the hands of those able to create beauty from structure. To date, most examples of neat tricks and hacks have been demonstrated by structurists and coders. Designers have yet to make their mark. This needs to change. Why participate? For recognition, inspiration, and a resource we can all refer to when making the case for CSS-based design. This is sorely needed, even today. More and more major sites are taking the leap, but not enough have. One day this gallery will be a historical curiosity; that day is not today.Color synthAxis is a free online tool designed to simplify the nightmare of color scheme selection. It looks complex, but after a few minutes you won’t be able to live without it.
Light on Dark is a fan of web sites that use dark backgrounds for a long time, but have seen many poorly implemented instances of this color scheme, which leave web site hard to read and painful to look at. Light on Dark attempts to showcase well designed and coded web sites with light text on a dark background, and serves as a portal to promote the techniques used in the development of those web sites. It is not always appropriate for a web site to use a light on dark color scheme, and we are not advocating that this design be used all the time, but when it is used and done right, the web site is sure to leave a lasting impression on its visitors.
Design Snack is a community-based web design showcase. We allow our members to vote, comment and ultimately choose the web sites that are showcased on our front page.
Web Standards Awards Web standards are recommendations by the W3C — the people who created the Web — as to how web sites should be constructed. They created these standards so that the Web would work better for everyone: from visually-impaired users to 1600 x 1200 super-computer users. Web Standards Awards aims to promote web site design using W3C standards by seeking out and highlighting the finest standards-compliant sites on the Internet.
The CSS Table Gallery is a showcase of how CSS and data tables can work together to create usable and pretty results. Every once in a while there are emails on discussion lists asking for nicely designed tables and they are prone to go off-topic and ending in a holy war why tables are bad and why you shouldn’t use them. There are legitimate uses for tables, for tabular data they are the best solution, as – properly marked up – they structure the data for the visual user and make it easy to follow for blind visitors or those using user agents without table rendering.
Unmatched Style is a constantly growing community dedicated to acknowledging those who have made exceptionally gorgeous web sites using Cascading Style Sheets and web standards. CSS Collection The project started as a list to showcase what can be done with CSS when it’s used for positioning. Every entry is checked personally before posting. You can submit your site if it corresponds to the following guidelines:
- Site should be a web site not a web page.
- Quality matters.
- Forms should use CSS not tables.
- Keyword-oriented types of sites may not be accepted. This site isn’t about helping a site look good for search engines.
- Site layout still needs to be free of tables
- Flash-heavy sites not likely to qualify. We want to see CSS and HTML used to create a full-fledged site. Inserting a Flash-based page as an object doesn’t teach anything about CSS.
CSS Vault Instead of showing off great sites to everyone, let’s show off great sites that use CSS so we can inspire others to use the technology. The site can be useful for designers, developers, programmers, managers, or just CSS advocate.

When you need help and inspiration for truly effective flexible design, this is the place to visit! The purpose of Liquid Designs is to promote the use of liquid layouts in CSS based design. There are a lot of gallery web sites out there, and most of the web sites featured are less than 800 pixels wide, while a few are 1000 pixels wide. Liquid layouts are often avoided, and with good reason: it’s hard to design the appearance of a website without control over the dimensions. That being said, Liquid Designs exists to showcase those web sites that have succeeded at liquid design, and serve as a resource to those exploring it. Liquid Designs includes layouts that are purely liquid (also called fluid), mixed liquid and fixed, elastic, and progressive. You can learn more about liquid design in the Resources section.
